After a summer of sun, saltwater and chlorine, the hair shaft is already weakened. The outer layer – the cuticle – has lost some of its smooth structure, and hair feels drier, tangles more easily and breaks where it used to simply bend.

Then you go to bed. And spend eight hours rolling it against cotton.

What cotton does

Cotton has a rough surface at the microscopic level and draws in moisture. Two things happen overnight: hair is pulled against the fibres every time you turn, and moisture is drawn out of both hair and skin.

That's why frizz appears in the morning, not in the evening.

Two simple swaps

Silk hair ties instead of elastics. A standard hair tie squeezes and creates a fixed break point – that's why you get the bend, and why strands snap exactly there. How to wear your hair at night

Long hair: a loose, low braid or a loose knot high on the head, secured with a silk tie. Not tight.

Short hair or a fringe: leave it, but use a silk pillowcase.

Curls: a loose knot on top, known as the “pineapple”. Preserves the curl pattern considerably better than sleeping directly on it.

Caring for silk hair ties

Hand wash in lukewarm water with mild soap. Squeeze gently – don't wring. Leave to air dry. They'll last for years as long as you keep them out of the machine.
